Peznally I think directors and writers use sex scenes to see certain actors nude, abo Van Damme being a good example
-
Based on interviews and what Hollywood history I've read, this unquestionably true in not a few cases.

A History of Violence brightly proves you wrong. The two sex scenes in that move show how the relationship has changed between the two characters
-
Similarly works with 'The Fly' too. The two sex scenes not only show how much Goldblum has changed, but they also advance the plot in a huge way. Could also say the same with "The Boys", creepy 'mommy scenes', which are vital in understanding a certain persons character.

How would Moonlight even work, then?
-
I thought of Call Me By Your Name, too...sex scenes are especially important in queer storytelling/filmmaking.

Have you ever seen "Basic Instinct"?
-
Not only have I seen Basic Instinct, but also a bowdlerized cut-for-TV version of Basic Instinct. The latter made no sense.
