    I never read Goodreads reviews on my own books but sometimes I do go there to read reviews of other books, and it never ceases to amaze me that people are so invested in the idea that books must contain positive messages and have morally upright characters.

    20 years ago, I couldn't speak English. 10 years ago, I was so anxious I saw no point waking up every day. 4 years ago, I got an idea for a book about Black kids who spoke to spirits and the spirits who spoke back. Now, that book is out. What a life.

    creates an engaging world and a well-written narrative in this book. I would gladly add the book to my personal or classroom shelf, and I can think of students I've had over the years who would immediately gravitate to this otherworldly work.
