A 4 year old child actually has a few hundred million years of experience, not 4. Their rapid learning/generalization is much less shocking/magical considering this fact.

Biology is able to pass a lot information from one individual to another as lots of animals are born “ready to go” in both perception/control. And a large fraction of children getting better rapidly as they age can be brain maturing, not magic learning.

Very interesting take on human learning! Especially as I have observed a baby learn new stuff every day for the past 15 months. What is even more interesting to me is their ability to generalize. Once they learn a particular shape (like a circle), they can identify it everywhere.

(1/2) Evolutionary experience cannot be compared in number of years to direct training data. Evolution passes compact learning rules, architectures, etc., not gradients. A lot of learning in the brain is still pretty much magic to us.

Are we discounting the experiences of growing in the womb? They're still in the world even in the womb. Engaging in embodied experiences, subtle sensorimotor activity, forming a self-schema. I feel like we imagine a baby starts its existence only after it breathes in oxygen.
