Are you studying this out of interest or is there some ml connection?

mostly out of interest but deep learning is mentioned in the lecture because in this case it helps them color/segment different structures in the images

I have a whacky theory. DNA is helix shaped because light is helix shaped https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orbital_angular_momentum_of_light … UV light is said to have been instrumental in turning inorganic molecules into organic molecules.
-
not obvious because it's thought that LUCA (of this fame https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last_universal_common_ancestor …), which already used DNA, probably lived in alkaline hydrothermal vents, where light was likely scarce

When we did the ovarian cancer project at 1:04:30, it took a student over a year to manually annotate all the data on a Wacom tablet. If we were doing the same thing today, we would train a neural net for annotation and get it done in <1/10th the time.

sorry to hear that! the technology is absolutely there to do this much faster today but potentially requires work; not aware of how good/usable/"plug and play" the available tools/open source code is, or even the wider ecosystem of the labeling needs, etc. -
agreed. that's why I estimated 0.1yr instead of the actual compute time of 0.01yr

For ML folks,
#cryoEM is TB-scale, v sparsely sampled, volumetric data of thousands of protein species of largely unknown structure & organization, w/o ground truth for supervised learning. Few results from mainstream ML directly applicable. If that sounds interesting, join us!Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
