“The state of the art in explanation of a concept” - a phrase I first heard in a chat with @3blue1brown a while ago but has lingered with me since. Why shouldn’t there be an effort to seek/recognize such a thing for all concepts

Partly because different people often need different explanations

Well there may not be a single "state of the art" explanation that's best for everyone. There's also the immense benefit of understanding a concept from many different perspective, which I think is maybe much more important than understanding the concept.

It is often informally recognized by the default recommendations of people (@3blue1brown gets linked for math expanations all the time on HN/reddit). Also, wikis are arguably tha (linking to best AI explanations was my plan w http://theai.wiki  , though its been on backlog).

I like this. There has to be room for multiple SOTAs for a given idea since different explanations resonate depending on learning style and prior knowledge.

For a child everything is new. I explain every little thing that interests my 14 month old, seeking the simplest, using words i know he knows, emphasizing danger and usefulness, etc. There is much nuance to individualizing an explanation. ...on this level.

An explanation (= an answer to a why question) has two outcomes in the mind of the person that asked it - "satisfied" and "not satisfied"; but you can always ask another why and keep going down the rabbit hole. Feynman on magnets:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dp4dpeJVDxs …

"Art" is a constantly evolving relationship between object & subject, and as such, this "state" is constantly being renegotiated, as the subject is changed by an improved understanding of the object. New depths of the object can only then be explored, explained, and understood.

This growth requires considerable effort & cannot be an end in itself. Otherwise, the "concept" as object is replaced by the *relationship* as object, and the subject becomes blind to the original object of interest & study (the original concept).
