Our leadership doesn't know when this will end but New Yorkers deserve to know *how* it will end. What, exactly, are we waiting for? My Monday column in the @nypost:https://nypost.com/2020/04/26/wait-how-long-are-we-supposed-to-stay-in-lockdown/ …

People who actually read this column, instead of just assuming what it would say, have largely agreed with me. And that's been true across the political spectrum. The main pushback I've gotten is that NY does have a plan. I'll lay out below why this is false.

Before I do, though, I just want to note, again, that I took Coronavirus very seriously before many people did, way before NY officials did. I had a thread here on 2/25 warning ppl to stock up on supplies. https://twitter.com/karol/status/1232381281440354305 … My family started isolating before schools closed.

I feel like I have to reiterate that at no point did I think COVID-19 was no big deal. I don't think it's no big deal now. And I liked the way Governor Cuomo handled it at the start. He was clear and he was comforting. When it was time to switch to action, he fell apart.

So, "the plan." By beginning of April, it was clear that we had flattened the curve. That was the goal. Now that our medical system was no longer overwhelmed, it was time to make changes. Instead, on April 16th Gov.Cuomo announced that the blanket lockdown would extend a month.

He continued to divide businesses into "essential" and "nonessential" which doesn't make sense. By all measures schools are essential, right? *But I agree with keeping them closed.* It has been the wrong dividing line (as I wrote in early April: https://nypost.com/2020/04/05/its-time-to-figure-out-which-businesses-can-reopen-first-and-how/ …)

The plan released over the weekend is, again, not much of a plan. Look at this quote. That's A LOT of maybes and possibilities for only 2 industries to reopen in some areas. https://nypost.com/2020/04/26/cuomo-outlines-rough-plan-for-reopening-new-york-in-phases/ …pic.twitter.com/1WBeKGQt0W

Why wait until May 15 to reopen areas that haven't been hit by COVID at all? Those areas should open now. It makes no sense to wait 2.5 more weeks in areas that have seen barely any cases. As I wrote last week: https://nypost.com/2020/04/19/andrew-cuomo-owes-a-genuine-back-to-work-plan-to-new-yorkers/ …pic.twitter.com/SehUQ2aHO3

The mayor vs. governor thing in NYC is sometimes, fun, I'll admit, but right now it's absurd. The mayor announced a few wks ago that schools will stay closed for remainder of the school year. Gov puffed his chest and said he makes the decision...and then didn't change anything.

And yesterday the mayor announced "he hopes to have a roadmap by June 1." Read that again. That's not he hopes to open by June 1. He HOPES TO HAVE A ROADMAP to reopen. If NYC is staying closed past June 1, we deserve to know.https://abc7ny.com/nyc-recovery-plan-coronavirus-update-corona-virus/6130738/ …

The mayor also keeps speculating that the beaches will be closed this summer. Again, if that's the case, we need to know. NYC during a sweltering summer is not pleasant at the best of times. If we're going to be kept in our homes through the summer, New Yorkers deserve to know.

Vague timelines and maybes are not a plan. People are hurting. We need to know how this ends.

The problem is that while we may have flattened the curve, it’s plateau at a high level (one that is still a strain on the hospitals). Until we can lessen that burden we can’t ease up on the lockdown. My guess is not until June 1 and even then would have to be in stages

That is what happened with Obama, too. Great speaker--but just coudl nto translate into action--especially regarding the economy. Cuomo has been playing politics all along with his eye on being drafted to the presidential nominee if Biden collapses this August or a run in 2024.
