At the National Gender Service (NGS) we are getting lots of queries on self injection. Our recommendation is not to self inject unless you have been shown how to do it safely by a qualified healthcare practitioner (usually a nurse, doctor or pharmacist) 1/9

However, it is clear that due to the #COVID19 crisis, many people cannot access their usual healthcare team & so are engaging in unsafe injection practice.
If you are going to self inject, we’d rather you do it as safely as possible, so here’s some advice on safe practice.

4/9 Zoladex should NEVER be injected into a muscle. Nebido & Decapeptyl should only be given into the buttocks by a second person. Trying to self inject into your own backside could result in permanent nerve damage.

6/9 Zoladex is trickier as it’s a bigger needle & the injection device can be difficult to manage. This is another time to find a healthcare worker friend. Otherwise, get someone to give it for you. Gender affirming hormone therapy is NOT an elective therapy. Therefore it should NOT be interrupted during the #COVID19 crisis.
I have escalated the issue of lack of access to treatment that people are experiencing & will follow this up.
8/9 As previously mentioned, self injection is not recommended unless you have been shown how to do it safely by a healthcare practitioner. If your usual practitioner is not available then the safest & best thing to do is to contact your prescriber
