To everybody stressing out about the literal truth of this, try to be less literal. “More deeply true”. Cheer up. It’s a metaphor!

In the modern world, the statement "1+1=3" is more deeply true than "1+1=2" because the overwhelming majority of calculations on which our lives depend involve rounded numbers on computers. Our calculations are almost always close to the right answer but never quite the answer.

One of my all-time favorite math classes was matrix and numerical analysis where we learned just how explosively wrong rounding can go. I wish we taught that kind of thing to more students!

This doesn't mean math doesn't work it just means that it can't be applied unilaterally in every context. Quantum tunneling doesn't mean if I run headfirst into a wall I won't get a concussion.

Adding 7 to both sides we get 7+1=7+1+1+1. Rearranging, we can deduce that 4+4=10, and dividing by 2 yields that 2+2=5.
