If you think pursuit of truth should be science’s highest ideal, answer this. What if we had the budget to either cure cancer now but the cure would be a blackbox or we could fully understand how cancer works but we’d be 200 years away from curing it? Which would you pick?

(I think there’s a good chance that some company pouring tens of billions into AI research will find something that works well enough for cancer but is so complex that we humans barely understand it.)
