The reported death toll also reached a new high: 2,746. There is an important caveat to this number: NY reported 941 deaths, most of which were newly confirmed, but did not occur in the last 24 hours. Sharp local reporting on the topic:

We just updated the race and ethnicity data in the COVID Racial Data Tracker and we're happy to report progress. Only four states do not report some kind of race/ethnicity data. They are: North Dakota, Nebraska, Nevada, and South Dakota.

One thing I think we've learned about the COVID-19 data is that we should not declare that we've passed the peak based on 2-3 days of data. And yet, every week, Sat-Mon, I watch people declare that the worst is over.

Deaths, unfortunately, bounced back as they did last Tuesday. This is the highest death total for any day so far: 2,299. That's up 849 day-over-day and up 373 compared to a week ago. This is not what anyone was hoping to see in today's data.

Good news: the plateau is real. Bad news: yesterday's dip in daily deaths may have been a holiday reporting blip. We are back at 778 deaths in the past 24 hours, similar to #'s last week. As long as total hospitalizations remains flat, I suspect we can expect more of the same.

California has been the biggest question mark in the coronavirus outbreak. The state has the lowest per-capita testing rates in the country and a huge number of pending tests. After a lot of digging, we know (at least part of) what's going on now.

New: We don’t know how many COVID-19 patients are hospitalized across the country, because only some states are publishing data. Journalists can join our effort to gather this data from every state.
