I wish Google Maps had a "I'm walking home by myself at night" mode that would show you a way with well lit paths and open spaces. It always seems to take you on narrow, dark pathways in cities

Same for accessible routes. It doesn’t mention if a route involves e.g. a footbridge over a railway line. You only find out when you’re pushing a buggy that you have to completely retrace your steps and find an alternate route.

That still assumes the person is using public transport for the majority of the route.

It is, and there’s an open question about just how much of an obligation Google should be under to ensure their tools are equally usable. But it’s also likely that something like this isn’t a high priority because it’s not a profit driver. Therein lies the problem.
