I wish Google Maps had a "I'm walking home by myself at night" mode that would show you a way with well lit paths and open spaces. It always seems to take you on narrow, dark pathways in cities

That still assumes the person is using public transport for the majority of the route.

To be fair to Google, they acknowledge this is just a startpic.twitter.com/DwstpCY5Qc

It is, and there’s an open question about just how much of an obligation Google should be under to ensure their tools are equally usable. But it’s also likely that something like this isn’t a high priority because it’s not a profit driver. Therein lies the problem.

Yes! Recently discovered how inaccessible London is when taking the baby up for the day!
-
It can be a real nightmare. The tube is a lot less buggy friendly than you might think!

Up North it does not know about a lot of the alleyways, foot bridges and staircases, so it sends you along the main road (where the street view cars drove) instead. In Newcastle this can be particularly bonkers.
-
Here you can see Google maps refusing an alleyway, thinking a footbridge doesn't exist, and teleporting me onto the dual carriageway it crosses. This is my dog walk route, I've done it daily for 2 years. Google maps hasn't learned.pic.twitter.com/lGvBc41dvJ

The wheelchair accessible option reminds me every time that it may or may not be wheelchair accessible.

We used walking routes in DC with little kids and this was the worst. Another staircase??? They already have "report a crash", it shouldn't be harder to add that kind of feature to walking routes.
Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Mine keeps telling me to hurl myself into motorway traffic
-
You can use the walk mode in maps so it'll configure your destination based on footpaths and not roads
-
I appreciate stuff like wheelmap, although it has gaps and appears to require you are able to pinch-zoom (I don't see buttons) https://wheelmap.org/

Yeah the on foot feature tried to send me up a freeway on-ramp once
-
Ah, yes, it once tried to send me through a very much locked military-use tunnel under a six-lane motorway once. The only other way to the other side was an additional one hour walk. Good thing I am reasonably fit and not scared of walking through woodland alone.

I suggested this as part of a usability study for the now-defunct Google Trips app: those with different needs should still be able to sightsee safely and easily. I hadn't even considered the potential of being vulnerable at night.

BTW on the accessibility front, Aussie startup
@disabilityio has being working on solving this issue, but it takes a lot of effort to map the details https://abil.io/
