Now, the follow up is that ad rates are only one part of the picture. And spending some money on ads can get people sharing your organic post and help send it viral. That's probably where the pennies per thousand math comes in.

Either way, it's amazing Facebook released this. I've never seen the company just publish its advertisers' ad rates. And certainly not in a political context.

Making all political ad rates transparent in real time would be good for public —and possibly Facebook too. It would prevent speculative hysteria and give the world a better sense of how this very important platform operates as it relates to political campaigns.

Casey Newton's article yesterday in The Verge mentioned that the big difference was likely in eCPM (effective CPM) rather than regular CPM. If this chart shows regular CPM, it may not tell the whole story.
