This started, like most things, as a way to troll @Kevinakwok when I compiled his blog as a book. Afterwards, we both wondered what other books we should ship

Around the same time, our other housemate @jluan and his team at @OpenAI announced GPT-2, an AI which could generate conditional synthetic text. I began plugging in poetry I liked for fun:https://openai.com/blog/better-language-models/ …
Shortly after that, @AdamDanielKing released https://talktotransformer.com , which made it *really* easy and fun to interact with GPT-2, and I was able to run dozens of poems through it
It seemed that we could use the tooling from publishing @Kevinakwok’s blog to do a limited run of AI poetry books!https://twitter.com/kevinakwok/status/1178729856265113605 …
(Coincidentally, I’m not the first person at Root Ventures to publish a book - @AvidanRoss is published under Phaidon!)

Anyways, like any good side project, we were a bit over our skis to try to ship by the holidays - it turns out typesetting, printing, and setting up distribution for is *solved* but still not *trivial* - and there were many late nights:pic.twitter.com/zwBepS4vfI
In fact, we weren’t even the first (and likely not the last) to ship an AI-inspired holiday product:https://twitter.com/cah/status/1200471243906043905 …
I have to thank @chetanp for accidentally blowing our cover and giving me the kick in the butt I needed to accelerate the ship date

Scott and the team at http://www.editiononebooks.com/ in Berkeley were amazingly patient in explaining why some of our ideas around printing/binding were silly and then humoring us anyways. Working w them has me looking for more excuses to print books to experiment with their materials!
My takeaways from the experiment: we should pursue side projects more, and I’m v lucky to have enabler friends the tools we have available (software, distribution, physical processes) if you're willing to look is truly amazing! there’s something special about paper bookspic.twitter.com/cqVB0G9zAW
