I think we’ve been as broadly unsuccessful as we have in preventing autoimmunity for exactly the same reason our current research around healthy ageing has been unproductive: reductionist thinking When last did you see someone model more than one part of the immune system?

And as I mention at the end of the video, as part of the effort, I will plant a tree (i.e., donate $1) for every 6502 kit sold before the end of the year!

Amazing news: polio type 3 has just been declared eradicated. The WHO declared polio type 2 eradicated in 2015. That leaves polio type 1. There have been 206 cases of polio in 2019, worldwide:

Why do stars in space photos have spikes on them? Turns out it's actually because of quantum mechanics! These are diffraction spikes, due to the way light interferes with itself when it passes by the little metal struts that hold the telescope's secondary mirror in place.

An image of two interacting galaxies, one a spiral and one a sort of elongated streak. There are also bright stars in the pic, with four-pointed spikes coming off them.
An image of a nebula called "Pillars of Creation." It's a few columns of dust and gas that appear to be back-lit. There are also a couple of stars in the picture with four-pointed spikes coming off them.

"Duplicated effort" is an anathema to most developers. But for a new service, when you are figuring things out and need to move quickly, the cost of consensus can be crushing. It's better to have "duplicate" efforts and join them later if you figure out they really are the same.
