Yesterday morning:
great results from large trial of AZ‘s #covid19 vaccine
Yesterday evening:
DSMB „expressed concern that AstraZeneca may have included outdated information from that trial, which may have provided an incomplete view of the efficacy data“https://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/niaid-statement-astrazeneca-vaccine …

“It was not necessary”, says Fauci. "If you look at it, the data really are quite good. But when they put it into the press release it wasn't completely accurate.”https://www.goodmorningamerica.com/news/video/fauci-discusses-concerns-oxfordastrazeneca-vaccine-data-76626319 …

Fauci just called me as well and clarified the concerns: “It appears that they [AZ] may have been using the most favorable data, and the DSMB wanted to make sure that they corrected that..."

He also clarified what happened with the press release: The NIH had modelled their press release announcing the results on the AZ press release. So when the DSMB raised concerns about that data, they felt they had to make this public too.

So,
@washingtonpost has the letter that the DSMB sent to AZ and US officials and it looks like we may be talking about 69-74% efficacy for the vaccine instead of 79%. If that‘s true: Were those short-lived extra 5-10% really worth all this, AstraZeneca? https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/astrazeneca-oxford-vaccine-concerns/2021/03/23/2f931d34-8bc3-11eb-a33e-da28941cb9ac_story.html …pic.twitter.com/v5DQYqKbel

Hopefulley ending this thread here with the announcement by AstraZeneca that their newer data shows the vaccine to be 76% efficacious not 79% at preventing symptomatic

My awesome colleague
@sciencecohen wrote a story yesterday about this whole AZ brouhaha and I will absolutely end this thread with a link to his story and this quote from it: "The company people shot themselves in the foot while the foot was in the mouth”https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2021/03/astrazeneca-lowers-efficacy-claim-covid-19-vaccine-bit-after-boards-rebuke …Show this thread

Why is everything Dr. Fauci says so unclear and on the fence. It’s all very confusing. I wish he was a better communicator. And I wish Fauci would take a break from the full court press. It’s omnipresent - and also unhelpful as it stirs the pot unnecessarily.
-
He usually seems clear to me. I appreciate his candor in not reifying science and data, particularly on Covid where our days are so impacted, and our collective understanding is evolving day by day.
