Another look at the DOC's prison population - which is notably on track to drop below 10k for the first time in 30 years.https://www.ctinsider.com/news/coronavirus/ctpost/article/As-CT-prison-population-nears-milestones-fewer-15315988.php?src=shrdpstrip&_ga=2.224446361.2063221759.1591109541-1533705739.1556122081 …
The DOC released 1,995 people from its sentenced population between March 1 and June 1. It appears an additional 138 released have returned to prison. In the same period a year ago, 1,845 people were released and in the three months prior to March 1, 1,600 people were released.

So there is a slight increase in releases. But the intake side is where the more dramatic numbers show up. Between March 1 and June 1, just 446 people entered the state’s sentenced population. Compared to 1,749 a year ago and 1,550 added in the prior three months.

The overall prison population (sentenced and pre-trial) has seen a net decline of 16% since March 1. The population of white prisoners declined by 19%, but the black and Hispanic population only declined by 14% each, despite making up a majority of the overall prison population.
