Boundary extension is not universal - contractions are actually more common for scenes. These transformations are predictable by image properties, and happen even in a perceptual task. New paper by me and now out in :

Is semantic priming in crisis? Social psychology's behavioral priming has been under fire for several years now. But what about cognitive psychology's good old semantic priming? Evidence that this doesn't work either by Timo Stein Et al.

Ok now it's completely bistable (AND AMAZING) - do you see the swinger going toward the building (further away top left) or toward the camera (further away top right)?

Are names useful guides to new categories? In our new paper, now online at Cognition, and I show that even simple categories are much easier to learn when their features are easy to name. (1/6)

They did it again! “human vision is not only attuned to socially relevant entities, such as bodies, but also to socially relevant spatial relations between those entities.” Congrats to and !

Together, our results demonstrate that scene processing is tightly linked to the structure of real-world environments. The profound sensitivity to spatial structure may contribute to the efficient parsing of complex scenes in real-life vision. n/n

Crucially, we show that this sensitivity is unrelated to simple visual differences. In scene-selective visual cortex and after 255ms of vision, sensitivity to spatial structure was larger for upright than for inverted scenes. 4/n

Decoding from separate fMRI and EEG data, we investigated where and when scene-selective responses differentiate between intact and jumbled scenes. These analyses showed that neural responses are highly sensitive to spatial (but not categorical) scene structure. 3/n

Natural scenes are meaningfully structured. To investigate how this structure is reflected in scene-selective cortical responses, we used scenes whose parts were combined in different ways. Critically, the parts could be jumbled in their category or their location. 2/n

Very excited to soon be hiring a PhD student to join in September 2020. If you are, or know someone, interested in doing a PhD on language production and ageing, please get in touch! Advert and more details will follow soon.

In sum, our results show that during perceptual processing, the brain uses real-world structure to organize fragmented inputs. The sorting according to scene schemata may support the rapid contextualization of incomplete inputs in visually challenging real-world environments. n/n

Further, we show that this sorting is unexplained by DNN features (although they explained the neural category organization) and that it occurs similarly for indoor and outdoor scenes - suggesting that the sorting according to scheme schemata is invariant to visual features. 5/n
