Elbert Lester’s family has owned land in the Mississippi Delta for longer than anybody alive knows. Family legend says they got it after slavery, via 40 acres and a mule. But that's *really* unlikely. So I went to find the land’s history. 2/pic.twitter.com/ciSHUDLA52
At the courthouse, it was like the building itself wanted me to understand the world black people faced at the time Elbert’s ancestors got this land. What a historians treasure trove! I lived in Mississippi for a few years and some of the places there are like time stood still. It's sad, and steeped in a really dark history for POC.
