When scholars speak against and mischaracterize antiracist work, the alt right thinks those scholars are on their side but just can't say it directly. This is not a theory. They come out and say it.

And a common thread of the "reasonable" and "open-minded" discourse on these panels and social media is a characterization of medievalist antiracists as a small, noisy, and disruptive cohort who bullies the reasonable people. It is not.

The antiracist movement in medieval studies is a large & growing group of hundreds of thoughtful colleagues from all ranks & institutions who care about each other and our students. Our group doesn't always speak up when and how we should. I know I don't, but we listen and learn.

I used to know too many people on that panel, and seeing it makes me very sad. Some I already knew had made their decisions. Others I did not. (I know my sadness means nothing. I just gotta keep doing the work I'm trying to do. but still- that screenshot really hit.)
