What if cities took their and federal infrastructure funding and INVESTED it into 1000 small projects to improve local neighborhoods vs SPENDING it on a mega project to add lanes or new road that will just be congested again in a year and increase future liabilities?

You get what you plan for. Folks don't want density or traffic, but then they gripe about roads being to close and certainly don't want to pay what's truly needed to build and maintain roads over time. Just another flaw of sprawl revealing itself.

Affordable housing is different than housing affordability. Affordability and quality do not have to be mutually exclusive. Quality of life means different things to different people. And, what's affordable for buyers isn't always affordable for the city to serve. That's all.

The Dutch invest €595 million annually on urban biking, resulting in €19 BILLION saved in public health care costs alone. That’s how smart govts do the math on investing in better mobility. Let’s be clear — it wastes public money to NOT do it. HT

We judge people too much by the opinions they give and too little by the values they live. You don't have to like their point to admire their courage in making it. Decency is avoiding disrespect, not avoiding disagreement. Integrity is trying to get it right, not being right.

Bipartisan love for a taxpayer funded program with almost no accountability. Look no further than the emotional freakout from many state DOTs & Senators from FHWA's unenforceable memo suggesting we prioritize repair, safety, climate & equity before building more of the same.

Mayor Funk is spot on, as usual. In my experience, there is plenty of room in police budgets to repurpose dollars from low value to higher value services and strategies. Better policing does not have to cost more money.

Back in Morgan City and Berwick, LA with for a 2nd workshop on cultivating fiscal health and local wealth. Really enjoy coaching cities and residents on how to embrace and execute incremental development to improve their downtowns and neighborhoods.

These incidents are not "accidents". They are crashes that kill innocent people, and they can be prevented with better design that protects humans. We have to stop the heavy bias toward protecting drivers that are already protected by their steel cocoons.

Study of Edinburgh block types by Chris Ritter, illustrating how a place can be enhanced by greater density. A suite of lovely renderings here:

I'm not one to idolize celebrities in the least bit, but I must say that Keri Russell is a true inspiration to me for emulating a Dutch Cycling life on her Gazelle omafiets. 🇳🇱 😍 1/2

Every mayor and council member in every suburb needs to read this thread on housing, written by one of their peers. This is absolutely spot on.

“It’s incredible what a bike can do for a kid’s independence, and I will tell you first-hand how [my son] has become so much independent and self-reliant since we moved to the Netherlands and a big part of that has been his ability to just ride his bike”

👇he's right. The longer we wait to transform cities into places comfortable for people to get around without a car, the more the driving folks will be subjected to higher gas prices, home values, property taxes, etc. Either embrace change or stop bitching about prices going up.

How about that! No one had to require it. MPOs and states that want to do something different with the money they have discretion over can do something different.

I've met and worked with a lot of cities over the last decade since I first encountered Strong Towns. Few if any of them match what the is doing to embody strong towns principles. They got my vote in round one of the 2022 contest. 👍

This is a myth that everyone seems to believe, including the press, in spite of very easily quantifiable proof that it is wrong and has been for decades. Was it ever true?

We should be asking, ‘What is a fully utilized road? How much of the day should it not be fully utilized so that we’re not wasting money?’ It’s too tantalizing to buy more toys before we take care of the toys we have. We can’t seem to fail at this enough to learn the lesson.

Virginia has 6,359 bridges in need of repair. $536.8 million in new federal funding will help, but how’d it get so bad? 🛣💰🚧 In my latest story, hear from Sen. , & why we can’t seem to fix it first.
