After a year of work, a life-changing journey & many new friends & collaborators along the way, a show on Seeing Providence Chinatown project will be up shortly at ’s Aborn Gallery on Empire St – just a few steps from where Chinatown once was. Sept 8-24, Thu-Sat 12-5PM.
(An evening view down onto a quiet street in blue and purple twilight tones, with lamplight from doorways)

Seeing Providence Chinatown
Jeffrey Yoo Warren

100 years ago, Empire Street was home to a vibrant Chinatown, with shops, community organizations, subsidized housing and more. How should we understand their stories, the stories of their descendants, and what it should mean to us today, as Asian Americans?

A “relational reconstruction” project which seeks to understand what it might have felt like – personally – to walk down Empire street in 1914. Working from archival photos and maps, I have spent months crafting a virtual reconstruction of the neighborhood. Visit AS220 – only feet away from the site of Chinatown – to see how the process works and where it may lead.

September 8-24 | AS220 Aborn Gallery

WITH SUPPORT FROM RI COUNCIL FOR THE HUMANITIES, PROVIDENCE DEPT. OF ARTS CULTURE AND TOURISM, AS220, & MOVEMENT EDUCATION OUTDOORS.

"A key deliverable of each grant will be a “playbook”... I've also written extensively on organizational strategies for inclusive community. I worry typical academic open source practices are a bit different from healthy and inclusive open source community outside the academy.

Great opportunity. I've spent 10+y mentoring & introducing 50+ learners to open source for enviro science , in paid fellowships w /#GSoC, & welcomed >1k 1st time coders into our majority POC code community. I'd be happy to consult on a project for this grant.

3 months into my residency, and 1 year into the Seeing Providence Chinatown project, I'll be hosting 2 more visits to a virtual reconstruction of Providence's Chinatown as it was in 1914, before its destruction.

A view down a sunrise-lit virtual street, a reconstruction of Providence Chinatown, with two-story buildings crafted and collaged from newspaper and archival photographs, and a boulder hovering mid-street.
In the last week of May I had the privilege of welcoming a few dozen people into the first public visit of the Seeing Providence Chinatown project.

I feel like the ideas behind public domain, copyright, etc flatten some nuanced ethical considerations into a question of property. And the practice of citation can become a formal obligation to fulfill rather than an act of thanks and an expression of respect.

Anyone else feel like "nostalgic prince" maybe isn't the right take for an antisemitic insurrectionist?

Nostalgic for the pre-1918 German empire, when his ancestors reigned over a state in eastern Germany, Prince Heinrich XIII had openly embraced a conspiracy theory that Germany’s postwar republic is not a sovereign country but a corporation. nyti.ms/3UPKohQ

"check all that apply" is more widespread now, as I'm sure fellow mixed race people have noticed. Nice, but still crude. Think how often that can become "people who identify as white" - there needs to be a distinction between "seen as white" vs has white ancestry.

So here's my entire site, running off of that: github.com/jywarren/seein (just an early draft for now) Just an index.html & some ____.md files; it publishes directly to GitHub Pages. When you edit the files, the site automatically updates, since it's run directly off those files.

I just couldn't not... write a barebones CMS that generates a static site from markdown files with no compilation. Calling it markdown-pages. I just want to edit markdown files and that's it... and this seems to work?
