100 years ago, Empire Street was home to a vibrant Chinatown, with shops, community organizations, subsidized housing and more. How should we understand their stories, the stories of their descendants, and what it should mean to us today, as Asian Americans?

A “relational reconstruction” project which seeks to understand what it might have felt like – personally – to walk down Empire street in 1914. Working from archival photos and maps, I have spent months crafting a virtual reconstruction of the neighborhood. Visit AS220 – only feet away from the site of Chinatown – to see how the process works and where it may lead.

The process of reconstructing the neighborhood’s buildings, streets weaves together and interlinks the few images remaining of this once-vibrant enclave, of which almost no trace remains today.

Seeing Providence Chinatown is an ongoing project using archival photographs and records to reconstruct an immersive 3D model of historic downtown Providence Chinatown in 1914.

Two dates are available, both 1 hour long and capped at 25 people; one reserved for Asian American audience and another open to all. Jan 25, 7-8pm ET (reserved for Asian American visitors) Jan 26, 5-6pm ET (general audience)

residency, and 1 year into the Seeing Providence Chinatown project, I'll be hosting 2 more visits to a virtual reconstruction of Providence's Chinatown as it was in 1914, before its destruction.

I feel like the ideas behind public domain, copyright, etc flatten some nuanced ethical considerations into a question of property. And the practice of citation can become a formal obligation to fulfill rather than an act of thanks and an expression of respect.

Fixed a bug on iOS and rereleased. Thinking of releasing some themes since I was able to make another website with it that looks utterly different.

"check all that apply" is more widespread now, as I'm sure fellow mixed race people have noticed. Nice, but still crude. Think how often that can become "people who identify as white" - there needs to be a distinction between "seen as white" vs has white ancestry.

My fav part: this whole project is only ~60 lines of code. It did rattle around in my head for months first, to get there. I think the older I get, the more I value conciseness, esp. in technology. Very satisfying.
