I don't have any evidence for this, but something gives me the feeling that the loudest "flat earthers" are essentially propagandists interested in and/or incentivized by an uneducated populace.

My current weird food obsession is extremely sharp cheddar cheese. The grocery store's "extra sharp" is often a horrible lie since "sharp" is not a regulated term. Actually-extra-sharp cheddar is aged for years — an entirely different cheesy ballgame that is tangy and delicious.

The most dad thing I've done today: held a sneeze until I could get in front of my infant daughter to show her, who thinks sneezes, belches, and burps are hilarious. 🐣 She laughed uproariously. 😄

Great thread by and an unsettling idea (at best) to contemplate if you've been the beneficiary of cryptocurrency gains.

My Arch Linux upgrade went seamlessly. My upgrade to Ubuntu 18.04 made nvidia break bumblebee and all my graphics card usage, and I'm currently in a hellscape of editing modprobe.d. Meanwhile I see people in forums saying "awesome, the 18.04 upgrade just works!".

Words can express ideas that aren't possible for computers to compute. Some people think there are experiences that can't be put into words. Does this tower keep on going? Are there things which can't be described even by reference to experiences, words, or computation?

I love this picture of Admiral Grace Hopper. Some photographer is in her office, probably for a mandatory photo op, and she's clearly like "I just got my coffee and I'm ready to get to work on my DEC VT220 terminal, and I don't have time for this nonsense".

Admiral Grace Hopper standing behind her office desk, looking sideways with one arm on her hip and the other on her desk. On the desk is a DEC VT220 terminal.

Getting ready to upgrade to 2018.08.01 Arch Linux. Even with Nix and friends and a reproducible environment I can restore from scratch in 7 minutes, it still feels dicey to take the plunge. Onwards and upwards!

Just found it thanks to the rubber-duck debugging of typing all this out. It's 's "Applied Performance Theory". So good:

Twitter friends: I'm looking for a talk that I'm positive exists but can't locate, because I want to cite it. I'm pretty sure that: * the speaker identified as a woman * it covered the universal scaling law * it had a mathematical slant * it happened in the last ~12 months
