The thing about paywalls is...they are a short term strategy (not that there is anything wrong with that).
-
-
@emilybell IMHO, they are not a strategy just a short term tactic. -
.
@jxpaton you are right - they should be, but think in some cases the tactics are given strategic status.
@emilybell My fear is the industry takes the short term paywall money and stands down on true digital innovation.
-
@jxpaton@emilybell agree 100%. Thus far almost all of the focus on the future has been on outputs. Not the work of journalism itself. -
@jxpaton What defines "true digital innovation"? And who represents this kind of innovation today?@emilybell -
@jxpaton@emilybell I'd agree that paywalls may not be the only solution, but what are the leading examples of "true digital innovation"? -
@mathewi@jxpaton@emilybell no reason to fear it.. just find a way to sell short and work for the competition. It's a no-brainer invesment -
@jxpaton@emilybell We look at the Guardian as leader in innovation, but it's loosing money... :( -
.
@oivindi@jxpaton@emilybell HuffPoSpoilers -
.
@annamasera@jxpaton so is@twitter so did@facebook for a while. You sometimes have to lose money to change the world. This seems obvious. -
@emilybell but twitter and Facebook are VC plays so just a question of passing on to next gen investors. Not true of our fave paper -
@timbrooks100 because there is no perceived innovation in news ..@BuzzFeed 's a VC play too. -
@emilybell@jxpaton :) I hope so, but I don't see much optimism in our industry! -
@emilybell yes Buzzfeed is but Gdn is not. Was worried you wren't watching the game but see you are :) -

@gavinsblog@jxpaton@emilybell I rarely go straight to news sites; Twitter, then click. Think we're in a state of "aggregated journalism."
