A 24-year-old man died on Tuesday morning in Rikers Island, the ninth such fatality in Department of Correction custody this year. The news comes as the city jails struggle with a rising tide of self-harm incidents, which have included several suicides.

Even now, if we just did a hard quarantine in the US for even just a month and everybody started getting vaccinated at a higher rate, we could get out of this purgatory. Am I a ghost? I'm like half-ghost at this point. I have one foot inside the threshold, and one toe outside.

I've been supporting families worried about their loved ones in Afghanistan. Yesterday, Boris Johnson promised that all MPs who had contacted the Govt would get a response by the end of the day. With that in mind, I'm just wondering where the replies are to all 200 of my emails.

This is absolutely disgraceful from the Guardian - though I hope an effect of it will be that more people end up reading Butler’s crucial passage (& full respect and solidarity for for doing the eliciting)

On Dario Argento's birthday, this is my favourite Argento book. Hours of fun tracking down the Turin locations. Although frankly if you threw a rock in the air in Turin it would probably land in a location from an Argento film.

Coming through Carnoustie yesterday when a woman asked me to go and check on this chap as he'd been wondering around the park looking a bit lost, within 2 minutes of talking to him i realised he was anything but lost. His name is Ramsay 'MacNoor', and he was born in Iraq in 1935.

While that's kind of shocking, it's also not surprising — back in the "nobody puts these stories on the front page" era it was widely known the US-backed regime incorporated war criminals at the highest levels.

To take this out of irony mode, the NYT ran an op-ed by an the Afghan National Army corps commander for Helmand complaining that he'd been betrayed by Joe Biden. Two weeks later, the New Yorker reports he was out there ordering the massacre of civilians.

Tomorrow is Brazil's independence day. There may also be a military coup. Let's have a brief look at Brazil's history of fascism, and the parallels with the UK and the US 🧵

Today my team sued Texas 4 minutes after its latest voter suppression bill was signed into law. My team is already challenging voter suppression laws in Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas & Montana. What we really need is for Congress to pass new voting rights laws ASAP.

“There won’t be rapists' babies delivered in Texas because Texas will arrest the rapists.” —Greg Abbott, idiot 1. But you can’t arrest a rapist until AFTER the rape; and 2. Many victims will be denied abortions; therefore 3. There WILL be rapists’ babies delivered in Texas.

Dear world, Next time you go car shopping and are looking at a shiny new Tesla remember that this motherfucker so many people thought was "so cool" will not stand up for a single woman in Texas after having just moved his company there. "I would prefer to stay out of politics"

When people like Abbott talk about “eliminating” rape, they’re talking about narrowing its definition to rape by strangers accompanied by violence. They’re telegraphing an intent to fear-monger about non-white men as sexual predators vis a vis white women. That’s what’s ahead.
