There's a growing phenomenon of "herbivore men" who are either too passive to approach women or can't be bothered. Social changes - where men can't find stable employment, women must choose between work & family, and single earner households are uneconomical - make matters worse.

My worry is that Japan is just the west but a couple decades earlier. Just wait until precarious work becomes the norm rather than the exception and social alienation starts getting even worse
