As a Virginian, I was raised to worship Lee despite the fact I was also raised to be a progressive. We were taught to exempt him from the Confederacy because he nearly led the Union army at Lincoln’s request. It wasn’t until well into adulthood I realized this absurdity...

Reconciliation and the reconstruction civil rights amendments were more important than hanging a few rebels. Being punitive towards the south after the war would have sewn the seeds for another civil war.

Presently Shedding light on atrocities to counter a white washed glorification of the southern commander does not constitute retribution. Especially since contemporaneously future President Grant was more than gracious to the surrendering Lee.

This was in reference to the above post about a Nuremberg for confederates. The country was better off because we didn’t humiliate the south.

I would add one bit: He was nowhere near the general the Lost Cause has invented him to be. Pickett's charge was as awful a miscalculation as any in a war rife with gross miscalculation. Lost Causers tried to blame Longstreet, who told Lee how stupid the move was.
