Tuesday Technical Tweet Thread Time! Let's go on the roller coaster of what happens at a low level when a DNS server sends an 4,000 byte EDNS0 response to a client whose MTU is 1200 bytes. Confused already? don't worry, we'll break it down. I promise it's super interesting.

Any systems programmer has war stories to tell about the theoretical behavior of time in the system v.s. what's actually seen in the wild.

You’ve no doubt seen other people quote-tweeting this thread and thought ‘oh, I’ll read it later.’ Read it now. You won’t regret it… it’s a thread that *you* should read. (And you, and you, and you. Because everyone should read it.)

I know everyone thinks NZ and Australia are right next to each other, but the actual distance is such that New Zealanders' skies filling with Australian bushfire smoke is more like Canada getting smoke from a fire in Texas.

It’s an understatement to say just how distinctly disappointing it is to see as a signatory to this despicable letter. We at will be discussing this at our executive council meeting in a few weeks.

PSA: TIS THE SEASON TO CHECK YOUR FORMATTERS, PEOPLE TIL that Java's DateTimeFormatter pattern "YYYY" gives you the week-based-year, (by default, ISO-8601 standard) the year of the Thursday of that week. 12/29/2019 formats to 2019 12/30/2019 formats to 2020

Skills that need to be taught in undergraduate physics curricula: - how to use git - proper code documentation - good mathematical writing for psets and papers - LaTeX - a computer algebra system (e.g. Mathematica) we can skip the 300th Ylm(θ,φ) problem to make room for these..

This is where I shamelessly use this new xkcd comic to advertise my book: (it’ll be a lot like the JJ Abrams version, but less lens flare)

A comic from xkcd with a timeline of the Universe depicted as a kind of cone from left (Big Bang) yo right (present day) with epochs labeled such as the Planck Epoch, Inflation, Cool Bug Epoch, “Someone tripped and accidentally hit the ‘inflation’ switch again”, etc. At the end there are dotted lines indicating possible futures and it says “Future cosmological development handed over to JJ Abrams, outcome unknown”

I know everyone's asking for $ this time of year, but we are SO CLOSE to our goal. Please help and if you can! We need to reach $4k/month on Patreon to pay authors at $0.08/word & publish as much original fiction as in 2019.

When we close our eyes, our sense of the world and our body’s place in it doesn’t disappear. An invisible impression remains. This sense is called proprioception. It never turns off, except in very rare cases. Here are those cases:

So when you format a floppy disk you can pick between full and quick format, and I think I only really understood the difference and what "full format" does relatively recently. SO A THREAD
