the thing I wanna say about wholesome games is that it’s fucking cool that people are making games that aren’t about violence. there’s a lot of work to be done on that front

I can think of 100 ways to make guns fun but move outside of that and it becomes a lot harder. Why? Because that’s the games I grew up with.

Anyone exploring nonviolent gameplay is laying the groundwork for the next generation of designers.

I think it all comes down to : one button gives you an instant interaction. And the easiest way might be guns, punches, jumps... Maybe, I don't know though 😐

Yup. Guns are boring, killing is desensitizing and also triggering if you've experienced violence, which a lot of people have, esp. POC & non-Western peeps. I hope games soon evolve beyond this adolescent stage of taking dev shortcuts like killing, destroying bc it's boring af.

Never thought about the trauma aspect of it for people in regions where extreme violence is the norm, this is eye opening. :(

Absolutely! It bugs me so bad that there’s fifteen thousand things I do during my day, none of which are shooting people, and yet only a couple are ever gamified.

Isn't that part of why it's approachable to gamify? We don't shoot guns daily any more than we meet aliens or venture to Mount Doom, and that makes it an attractive thing to gamify since not only can you get away with more inaccuracies, but we aren't tired of doing it every day.
