  2. What is it that distinguishes science from other practices that pretend to be scientific? It’s not peer-review, publications, authority, reputation, personality, institution.

  3. Many people have distorted and will continue to distort the scientific method and its products in order to support their main agenda. If you are not trained about how science works you will not notice this & will adopt just-so stories that do not represent how nature works.

  4. Yup, much of medical training is not scientific and it doesn’t teach critical thinking and how science works; it’s based on ritualistic dogmatic practices and beliefs we’re discouraged from questioning.

  5. This is well said and it’s an important point to address about scientific reasoning and statistical thinking. The average is an essential and useful statistical concept that gets misunderstood and misapplied quite often by many professionals, including those in medical practice.

  6. Does medical education teach the psychology of decision-making under uncertainty? No What kind of inferences do you think we draw from this neglect in our training?

  7. Pretty interesting stuff Gerd Gigerenzer has to say about the psychology of physician practice in this EconTalk podcast. I wonder if those who cite him often in support of “gut” feeling will also cite what he says in this podcast 🤔

  8. Are people practicing and teaching medicine as a nonscience? You betcha! What’s their excuse about how they teach and practice medicine? See David Sackett I wonder how many are not aware they’re not practicing & teaching medicine as a science, and how many don’t even care 🤔

  10. “Generational archetypes such as that of the “Millennial learner” are myths that perpetuate unfounded generalisations about cohorts, reinforce power differentials between age groups, and minimise the unique needs of individuals.“ MedEd is full of myths

  11. “What is worse… is the adverse effect that abandoning clear thinking & clear writing has on teaching & culture. Stdnts learn to repeat & to embellish discourses tht they only barely undrstnd. They can even, if they are lucky, make an academic career out of it…”—Sokal & Bricmont

  12. “The current research culture is characterized by significant pressure to present research projects as conclusive narratives that leave no room for ambiguity or for conflicting or inconclusive results.”

  13. Have you been trained to parrot things w/o knowing the evidence & statistics of what you’re saying & doing? "If we teach only the findings & products of science without its critical method, how can [someone] distinguish science from pseudoscience?"—Sagan

  14. “there was never really a moment when everyone stopped to ask what residency edu should be. […] Though there have been attempts along the way, we’ve mainly just made it up as we’ve gone along, with individual groups looking out for their own interests.”

  15. Medicine should be practiced as a science, so many times it isn’t. There are many reasons why it’s not practiced as a science, and that has to do w plain ignorance, willful ignorance, and incentives. Regurgitation of research products does not imply practice of scientific method.

  16. Dogmatism is not a specific content, dogmatism is the way professionals teach and assess content.

  17. Why do you think people do not have the courage and integrity to tell the world the emperor has no clothes? The immediate two reasons I can think of are: 1. Incentives 2. Pluralistic ignorance

  18. ⚠️ Not all arguments/critiques against science are valid. And not everyone who claims to follow scientific practices does so. Science continues to be our most successful method of understanding how nature works, but it will also be distorted, misunderstood, & misapplied by many.

  19. Those who only disseminate research products are not disseminating science. "If we teach only the findings and products of science without its critical method, how can [someone] distinguish science from pseudoscience?"—Carl Sagan

  21. Thanks. I’m not here for the likes, retweets, or replies. I know there’s lots of professional, not just on social media, who claim to produce and disseminate scientific work, but they’re really not. I’m here because there are unpleasant truths that need to be acknowledged.
