Thanks for thoughtful post! Couple follow-ups: 1) What % of this consulting could be delivered remotely (e.g. via video call) vs needing to be in-person? 2) What hourly rate would be needed to attract skilled consultants? (e.g. your postdoc friends)

1) Depends on sub-field, I'd guess for practical lab stuff, ~50-75% would need to be in-person. 2) Should be same as equivalent ppl in industries where consulting is standard already. Needs to account for amount of travel & sometimes sporadic&irregular work.

I largely agree... my only comment being that training also involves having people learn how to solve problems. Sometimes you can learn a lot by reinventing the wheel, the same way you can learn a lot by deriving from scratch an already proven theorem.

Agreed. I think that finding the right line between going slow and learning deeply about a thing vs. using what is there as black box is a major aspect of any successful project. Especially in training, but this applies in one way or another at any career stage.

Agree! And not just hardware issues. Often trainees waste time writing bad software that could be more cheaply and efficiently written by a professional software engineer. Why isn't software consulting a core facility in neuro depts?
-
That's a valid point but on the flip side more time and resources could be dedicated to teach trainees how to write good code. This is potentially one of the most useful transferable skills you could learn during a neuroscience PhD / postdoc.

just to spell out what you are thinking: is it that labs should pay other labs money at an hourly rate for technical advice (or something like that)?
-
Yea, hiring post-docs to consult could be one option, but its tricky to imagine how to juggle that and a postdoc workload. I think companies are likely better set up to provide this service, or (impartial) non-profits that connect (well paid) consultants to clients.

We agree! We're neuroscientists who created @Scipertise for this exact reason: We want scientists with technical expertise to share it (and get paid), and other scientists to be able to access it quickly, via video call. great post
I think the perception that postdoc/student time is not valuable is also probably a big contributor to unhappiness and burnout - yet another reason to support what you're proposingHvala. Twitter će to iskoristiti za poboljšanje vaše vremenske crte. PoništiPoništi
