One of the reasons people have told me they’ve quit their daily gratitude journal is because it feels repetitive after a while. It’s a fallacy of our modern society that we only value the new and exciting. It’s great to be thankful for the same things every day.

Great point. All gratitude journals should put something inside like... "Repetition is welcome. It isn't just OK, it's beautiful to be grateful for the same things every day. ;) "

Recently I’ve started writing down people I’m grateful for and that’s opened up a whole new way of looking at things.

Not too surprised by this—that's also why compound effects are very often undervalued or simply dismissed in the short term. The value comes from building up that journal consistently, even if the contents are "same old": it helps free up the mind and focus

That’s why we become unhappy, don’t care about our mental and physical health, relationships end - we take the good things in our every day lives for granted. It’s not only great to be grateful, it’s necessary.

It’s not that people aren’t thankful, it’s that the emotional resonance wears off with repetition. That’s why I instruct my patients to close their eyes and truly savor each thing after they write it, and the research suggests you only need to do it once/week for benefit.

This is great to hear. I keep a gratitude journal and for the first month or two would list three things daily. Today, I probably write in it anywhere from 1x per week to 1x per month. I definitely felt the positive impacts of it immediately and still do, despite writing far less

On the other hand it's sucks to hear people guilt-trip themselves for not journaling every day. I view journaling as something that helps process thoughts and ideas which may help reduce anxiety. Instead people seem to view journaling as another thing to do that stresses them out
