I used to think as an entrepreneur everything I’d got I’d earned. More recently I’ve realized there was a huge amount of infrastructure set up for me to make it (educated workforce, execs, the internet) and I really controlled a much smaller % of the outcome than I’d thought.

We’re products of our environment. Some are (partly) conscious of this and actively tap in to maximise or make effort to change and get out.

Herb Simon (Nobel Prize winning economist) made a similar observation: that only ~10-20% of individual success could be rightly assigned to the individual vs. the society they were part of. E.g. would have been hard to start http://Justin.tv  in 2007 in sub-Saharan Africa

These are both interesting thoughts! A promising founder is promising due to their judgement/experience/etc. Justin's point seems to be more focused on external factors that give leverage to said judgement.

Yeah, for example imagine being an Iranian, you first need to invest 10 years of your life to become the citizen of another country just so you can have a business that is not stuck in Iran's economic bubble :D
