Liberty is an idea. Those who think we can impose libertarianism on society through social hostility and electoral victories are just as misguided as those who think we can impose democracy on another society through war and occupation. These notions stem from the same conceit.

  3. Congress can, of course, waive the application of an existing law through a new law. Understand, though, that this “waiver” is not a feature of the current law. There is no waiver provision. The waiver would be a totally new law, and this new law would violate the Rule of Law.

  4. The media do a disservice when they suggest a recently retired general can serve as secretary of defense with a “waiver.” The law doesn’t provide for any such waiver. What they’re really saying is that Congress must pass a special law for one person. This is manifestly improper.

  7. He shouldn’t be considered for the same reason that Sec. Mattis shouldn’t have been. The law prohibits recently retired members of the Armed Forces from serving in this civilian capacity. Biden would be the second president in a row to violate this norm.

Justin Amash Says Members Of Congress Have ‘No Idea’ Who Is Writing Legislation

Legislation used to be crafted by legislators, not “negotiators.” The public needs to know that members of Congress have no idea who the hell is writing our legislation. It’s certainly not us.

Moving U.S. troops from Somalia to Kenya, to launch operations into Somalia, is not bringing them home.

    1. Speaker’s primary focus must be nonpartisan: upholding process. 2. Rules must be followed consistently and not constantly waived. 3. Legislation must be in track changes format with enough time to read. Consider diversity of ideas by broadly allowing amendments on the floor.

We can’t really amend bills. We don’t genuinely debate bills. As a result, even fewer people bother to read bills. Bills that are passed don’t reflect the work of the body. Congress is only superficially a legislature. Congressional leaders have effectively nullified Article I.

Today marks the 87th anniversary of the repeal of alcohol prohibition with ratification of the 21st Amendment. Few people would prefer we return to that prohibition era, yet that was precisely the choice before the House yesterday: continued prohibition or repeal of prohibition.

In classic Trump fashion, he’ll pull troops from Somalia, not to bring them home but rather to bordering countries—to keep launching ops in Somalia. Theater for libertarians; continued war for the MIC. From a man who’s dropped more bombs there than his two predecessors combined.

The marijuana bill: Better to tax marijuana like alcohol than keep it illegal, which amounts to an infinite tax. Better to have some regulation of marijuana than the current maximal regulation: prohibition. Better to let people buy marijuana than put people in prison for it.

With marijuana illegal, you can’t lawfully obtain it at any price and face imprisonment for possession or sale. There’s no worse tax than infinity and no worse regulation than prohibition.

Stop centralizing power in just a couple congressional leaders in the House and Senate. This isn’t the way Congress is supposed to work.
