I am conflicted because I agree with @justinamash on government surveillance and wish @NancyPelosi would be better on that, but at the same time, she has spent decades in the vanguard on LGBT rights, while Amash came around (using the term loosely) quite late on these issues.https://twitter.com/justinamash/status/988840158563880960 …

Every time I brought Rs and Ds together to protect Americans’ personal data and #4thAmendment rights, you teamed up with @SpeakerRyan or @SpeakerBoehner to defeat us. You spearheaded the Democratic charge against two separate Amash amendments on the #PatriotAct and #FISA702. https://twitter.com/nancypelosi/status/988811061351649280 …

@JustinAmash said he was strongly for DOMA in 2010, 14 years after @NancyPelosi voted against it.

In 2010, before I was in Congress, I wasn’t aware DOMA included a federal definition of marriage. News reports focused on DOMA’s protecting states from having to adopt other states’ definitions. I’ve never supported idea of government-defined marriage for anyone, straight or gay.

In short, I’ve always supported keeping government out of marriage and allowing couples, straight or gay, to marry in accordance with their own beliefs. I simply did not know that DOMA had two parts—one of those parts, a federal definition, completely counter to my principles.

My initial misunderstanding of DOMA is one of my biggest regrets as a candidate and public official.

A politician recognizing an error of judgement. Wow. In any case, no Democrat can seriously say that they are better and consistently so on civil rights than a libertarian. Maybe, just maybe a super consisten ACLU member and even that is debatable.

But Amash wasn’t a straight up libertarian in 2010.

Maybe. But I would gladly sign for all members of Congress to be as imperfectly libertarian as Amash in a heartbeat. 😜

I mean, I am not even clear on whether he thinks the Supreme Court decided correctly on marriage equality in 2015.

So it seems like we are in agreement that if civil marriage exists for heterosexual couples, it must be available for gay couples and that, based on this, the Supreme Court made the right call in 2015. And I agree that marriage should be privatized.
