I am conflicted because I agree with @justinamash on government surveillance and wish @NancyPelosi would be better on that, but at the same time, she has spent decades in the vanguard on LGBT rights, while Amash came around (using the term loosely) quite late on these issues.https://twitter.com/justinamash/status/988840158563880960 …

To be fair, DOMA didn't just prevent states from being forced to legalize gay marriage, it prevented them from having to recognize someone's marriage if they entered into it in, say, Massachusetts, and moved to, say, Florida.

So under DOMA, a married gay person from Massachusetts whose 85 year old father had retired to Florida couldn't move down there with their spouse to help take care of their dad unless they were willing to move to a state with no legal recognition of their marriage.

I also don't think your rights should depend on what state you live in. But I do appreciate your reply, and I'm glad you've shifted on DOMA.

In short, I’ve always supported keeping government out of marriage and allowing couples, straight or gay, to marry in accordance with their own beliefs. I simply did not know that DOMA had two parts—one of those parts, a federal definition, completely counter to my principles.

Everyone makes mistakes, and I'm glad you've shifted on DOMA. What did you think of the Supreme Court's 2015 decision on gay marriage?

Exactly—— why is government involved in marriage in the first place? Why do I have to go and get the county to give me a license to marry the person I love? The less the government is in my life the better and the absolute last place the government belongs in in my bedroom!

I agree, but as long as there’s civil marriage, it has to be available to gay people. Hence, there was nothing good or defensible about DOMA.
