Witness the hypocrisy that our two-party system breeds: Check out these similar letters warning the president about commencing offensive strikes against Syria without congressional approval. 2013 signers: 119 Rs, 21 Ds 2018 signers: 15 Rs, 73 Ds Very few of us signed both.pic.twitter.com/40VEVtGwnq

There are good reasons why a particular person might not have signed one of the letters: The House membership is different. In addition, a person might not have known about one of them, or might have been sick or away that day, or perhaps had a nuanced but valid objection to one.

But those factors should wash out in the aggregate. The fact that the tallies are so different indicates that something else is at work at the macro level: double standards, selective outrage, and hypocrisy.

He asked for authorization, there was a debate, congress didn't pass it, we didnt strike Syria. It was the right process.

What about setting the line and Syrians crossed it years ago? What about allowing chemical war fare on your own civilians? Other nations agreed with the move. Lastly, don’t you think he would have received approval anyway? Thoughts

War powers belong to Congress. So your points may be valid and they can and should be argued in Congress. There is no imminent threat to the country so this is the correct process to determine the merit of the use of force. If there is merit, there is no reason to avoid this.

But swe are not declaring war. Agree that we would need congressional approval on that, but can’t wait for congress to stop an aggressive regime. Non political - think Obama should have used force when they crossed the line?

Well bomb dropping is an act of war l. We shouldn't be numb to that fact. Yes Obama should have tried on the assumption that it prevents future use of chem weapons. But he was correct to seek auth and make that argument. Our repesentatives didn't allow it.

Agree to disagree but like your point. Congress is dysfunctional. When we have all these countries agreeing and doing it together think it was right move. Congresss should now set parameters on what to do. Thank you

Justin, thank you for your principled stands. Don't always agree with you but I can only hope that the consistent integrity you demonstrate will spread throughout both aisles of congress. Hey, one can dream, no?

So tired of the party lines. We need to elect people to help the people. I say 80 percent of the population agree on the same principles. It’s the far left and right that get all the headlines.

Part of that though needs to be looking proportionally, not both sides are just as bad, which is a GOP talking point that doesn’t ring quite true. We need to look at the record of actions taken. The context, the process used, the reasons given.

I notice that @BarackObama was addressed as "The President" by the predominantly Republican signatories, while @realDonaldTrump is addressed as "President Donald J. Trump" by the predominantly Democratic signatories. The GOP was, & remains, shameless; a national embarrassment.

Read the text of both letters. Both men are addressed as "Mr. President." Getting bent out of shape because of the slight difference in the recipient's address is pettiness to the extreme. It's the very kind of pettiness that is driving our discourse to ruin.
