Wow, hard to see how party-line voting isn't just a direct affront to competitive politics, aimed securing incumbent advantage of the two major parties. (It does seem that this has been in the works in New Mexico for a while: http://www.13abc.com/content/news/Judge-Michigan-cant-eliminate-straight-party-voting-489824101.html …)https://twitter.com/readyforleddy/status/1034896240352407552 …

New Mexico Dems are so afraid of Gary Johnson they decided to destroy the integrity of the voting process. @NMSOSMaggie can sugarcoat it all she wants - this is a clear attack on third party candidates, especially @GovGaryJohnson pic.twitter.com/rlfkXnnhvr

Hey you know what’s worse. Partisan gerrymandering. Would you all support gerrymander reform?

Yes, both straight-ticket voting and partisan gerrymandering are terrible for our country.

Have you ever gone to a polling station in a poor urban area? Do you ever actively consider measures to alleviate the time burden of voting on the poor (early voting, more lenient absentee ballot rules, etc)?

Yes and yes. I support early voting/more lenient absentee rules, more time for voting, and more polling places and booths. I strongly oppose straight-ticket voting, which is primarily a scheme to unfairly benefit the major party establishments.

I appreciate your response. The problem is that when you eliminate party line voting without fixing the problems of poor urban polling places, you hamstring poor districts that are already barely functioning. Proposals like those you mention ought to be bundled!

I support fixing the other problems, but straight-ticket voting is not only unfair and harmful, it’s also a solution in search of a problem. The person who intends to vote all one party saves almost no time by having a straight-ticket option. Voting all one party is super easy.

If you really want to reform voting processes to benefit third parties, try alternatives to plurality, e.g. Ranked or instant runoff voting, multi-rep districts, etc.
