That’s false. My district was gerrymandered to make it easier for Democrats to win. If the boundaries had not been politically drawn, the district would include all of Kent, and my vote total would increase. Have you ever gone to a polling station in a poor urban area? Do you ever actively consider measures to alleviate the time burden of voting on the poor (early voting, more lenient absentee ballot rules, etc)?

Yes and yes. I support early voting/more lenient absentee rules, more time for voting, and more polling places and booths. I strongly oppose straight-ticket voting, which is primarily a scheme to unfairly benefit the major party establishments.

I appreciate your response. The problem is that when you eliminate party line voting without fixing the problems of poor urban polling places, you hamstring poor districts that are already barely functioning. Proposals like those you mention ought to be bundled!

I support fixing the other problems, but straight-ticket voting is not only unfair and harmful, it’s also a solution in search of a problem. The person who intends to vote all one party saves almost no time by having a straight-ticket option. Voting all one party is super easy.

Do you have thoughts on the Fair Representation Act and other voting reform efforts? If you're not aware, it's a bill that would switch House elections to a pseudo-proportional ranked-choice method. It wouldn't require parties to be part of the process and would keep local reps.

Well, @FairVote has a way. It's called the Fair Representation Act and it would switch us to a ranked-choice pseudo-proportional system that would restore local representatives and not codify parties as part of the process. Australia uses the same system and it works pretty well.

Gerrymandering works on the principle that 50%+1 of votes in a district = 100% of the seats in the district (1 of 1). In a proportional method, small victories don't lead to all of the power. Plus, the boundaries would be drawn by a nonpartisan commission, for what that's worth.

No, they try to give much bigger majorities than 50%+1 whenever possible. And of necessary sacrifice districts to the other party with big majorities so their voters are consolidated. You can’t counteract that with voting methods.

You're close, but what your missing is the majorities that the gerrymanderer creates for their side will be much bigger than those made for the other side. It works because a huge majority for the one side and a smaller majority (say, 65%) count for the same result.

With proportionality, the number of votes will correspond to the number of seats as much as possible.

Proportionality across all the districts means you take away local representation. A large city in a state dominates ALL the districts.
