So we just continue to allow other countries to rip us off & do nothing? Either we have fair trade or we don’t. When America is paying tariffs and we don’t even the playing field, we’re being stupid!!

-
If we impose tariffs we ARE paying them.
-
Indeed. And this fact in turn makes local products more competitive and/or stimulates enterprising individuals to create local supply that A) will be cheaper and b) will provide jobs. Besides, In what other way can you pressure an unfair trading partner to change his tune?
-
If a local supply could have been produced in a more cost effective manner, wouldn't it already exist? If you are getting something for less than you could get it from anywhere else, what exactly makes them an "unfair" trading partner?
-
Lets presume that your trading partner subsidizes a certain industry and/or devalues its currency which decreases the price of the goods in question, leaving you in disadvantage while at the same time charging high tariffs to the goods you sell to them. Not unfair?
-
No, not unfair. Countries don't have trading partners, people and companies do. If they're selling it to me for cheap, yay for me. I don't benefit from their not being allowed to sell me stuff for cheap. Someone else benefits because now I have to buy from them for more money.
-
Maybe yay for you. Not yay for the worker of a factory which gets laid off due to suddenly becoming uncompetitive due to unfair trading practices. The distribution channels and suppliers suffer, the people earn less money, fewer taxes get colleted. Yay is very shortsighted.
-
So you want US taxpayers to subsidize jobs in the US and to raise the cost of consumer goods to preserve jobs producing goods that we are already getting for less elsewhere?

WHY CAN'T WE HAVE MORE AMASHES IN CONGRESS? I mean, Econ 101 isn't hard to grasp yet it may as well be unicorn hair in DC. My only hope is that this is a genius bluff. If Trump can get other countries to lower their tariffs then drop our own, it'd be a win. Not holding my breath.
-
Did you actually read
@justinamash post? There is zero "genius bluff" here, only a policy that sounds strong to fools. -
Did you read mine? I said I'm not holding my breath. But if we've learned one thing is that no one has any idea wtf Trump is going to do next. I think we can agree that if in a few months the final result of this is reduced tariffs on US good and us dropping our own, it's a win.
-
@justinamash point is: we've already lost. Trump is just hoping we go along with his fantasy.

And it's a limited pie (false) take on how economies work. I want my trading partners to be thriving, not wrung out. If we keep this up we'll end up like Trump's businesses and only have Russia left to work with. Oh, wait a minute...

These TARIFFS are really working out well. It will cost ag about $12billion but that's ok b/c Trump will bail them out with his piggy bank--taxpayers. The world is America's piggy bank and America is Trump's piggy bank.https://triblive.com/usworld/world/13897506-74/trump-planning-12-billion-emergency-aid-to-farmers-affected-by-tariffs …
