It’s another good idea without a constitutional basis. I swear an oath to support and defend the Constitution, and I take that oath seriously. Constitutional limits are meaningless if we ignore them whenever we like the policy outcome.https://twitter.com/pkcapitol/status/1021534179190812672 …

OK, what about the Space Force?
-
I’ll let you know when I see the legislation!

-
It's idiocy. One thing comes to mind, NASA.
-
opposition at all costs helps no one but your blue banner. creating a new wing, or a mostly autonomous one like the marines, of the military would allow space exploration sciences to dip into massive military funds. it's logical to move military power to space for the future.
-
Or simply move those funds to NASA....
-
expanding the military is a much easier goal to achieve, politically speaking

Under your philosophy it seems like USAF being founded under Army would justify its continued operation under Army, but not its own independent branch of military w/ its own operational bureaucracy. Also, suicide hotline seems like a pretty good candidate for... (1/2)

“Lay and collect taxes... to... provide for the... general welfare.” As well as “necessary and proper.”
-
In the context of the constitution & the time at which it was ratified, "general welfare" is meant literally, as in "to the benefit of everyone". Roads, for example, could be argued to benefit everyone directly or indirectly via facilitation of transportation. (Cont.)
-
Arguments to the efficacy of such policy aside, that IS a constitutionally authorized power as a result. A suicide hotline would primarily benefit those at risk of suicide. That's more "specific welfare". Thus, it's more clearly "reserved to the states" per the 10th amendment.
-
So, basically, do it at the state level, start a charitable organization to operate at the national level, or both. Or amend the constitution to grant Congress the power to establish such things. It might seem inconvenient, but it's preferable to having a the government...

... equivalent of the Silver Age Superman, able to make up powers for itself on the fly. You can't be sure it will always act in the best interests of the citizens when it can do so. Power corrupts.
-
If you’re going to say that people indirectly benefitting from, but not themselves using, publicly funded transportation constitutes general welfare, then it seems like non-suicidal people indirectly benefitting from suicidal friends not dying also constitutes general welfare.
-
Also, if you want to get really cynical about benefits, there’s a national economic cost of suicide and self-harm behavior. Reducing that also benefits everyone.

The Constitution authorizes Congress to raise "armies" plural. The Air Force is still a lowercase-a army.

If you are going to have to amend the Constitution to create a National Suicide Hotline Number then the Constitution is just another piece of federal legislation.
