A few of mine: 1) The dissertation IS a genre. And it's a very unique and admittedly weird one: you'll likely never do another one, and it has limited aims and scope. Understand that, and you'll be able to better move through it.

2) A dissertation IS NOT a book. The two projects have very different aims, audiences, and structures. No matter how much you think you're writing it as a book, you're not, and you'll still have to undertake significant revisions to make it one.

3) A dissertation is an accreditation mechanism that demonstrates your capacity to undertake focused research on a specific topic and indicates your understanding of the existing conversations and contribution. It gives us confidence that you know the field and your place in it.

4) Best writing advice I ever received: don't get it right--get it writ. The process can create anxieties about how much reading you've done and whether it's ever enough, which can block your writing. You'll never know it all, but you can know enough to make a real contribution.

Other suggestions for the awesome grad students out there?

One more thing: it's a bit dated now and should probably be revised, but this volume was incredibly useful to me and, I think, still has a lot to offer for those revising their diss into book form (and understanding the difference between the two):https://utorontopress.com/us/the-thesis-and-the-book-6 …

Especially for those of us who have no family genealogy of graduate experience to draw upon, this kind of shared knowledge can make a huge difference. If not for my working-class, first-generation, BIPOC mentors who demystified the diss for me, I never would have made it through.

But also the dissertation can be a book.

I've never seen one that made the transition without substantial revisions between the genres, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. More often I've seen graduates assume that their diss could go straight into production and were surprised that they had revision to undertake.

Oooo. For me, my major barrier has been chronic illness followed secondly by needing to work.

What could make it a better process that attends to those challenges?
