"Monoliths are the future because the problem people are trying to solve with microservices doesn’t really line up with reality", I aspire to such savage language as that which flows from . PREACH BROTHER! 😂❤️✊

I feel like most of work culture is just straight up motivated by fear. Fear of losing everything, fear of unemployment, fear of isolation, of no health care of blacklisting, just fear. straight up fear.

“DoorDash pays the average worker an astonishingly low $1.45/hour, after accounting for the costs of mileage and additional payroll taxes.. Nearly a third of jobs actually pay less than $0 after accounting for these basic expenses.” ☠️💰

Any gig-worker app that cannot make the business model work while paying $15/hour (after expenses!), basic benefits, vacation time, and family leave should not exist. Running a modern-day serf economy behind a slick UI is disgraceful.

Did the Google recruitment team not get the memo that Google bosses fire workers for organizing?

A frustrating experience for me is when I spend hours trying to convince a dude of something, and then another colleague says the same thing and the dude goes "oh, ok, makes sense". Sometimes I think I am not convincing, and sometimes I remember this:

tl;dr instead of telling people to wait 30 minutes before asking questions, encourage curiosity and allow people to actually ask too many questions. Provide a psychologically safe place to mess up, and provide useful and timely feedback when they do.

A worry junior engineers and new hires frequently have is that they ask too many questions. The most common advice I've heard is to try to figure it out yourself for 30 min, and if you're still stuck, ask. This is reasonable advice, but I don't think it's actually very good.

If your company's "Diversity Efforts" stop at the door, if they don't translate into who you'll do business with and what your products are, they are shallow and worthless. Those external concerns will always override the internal ones eventually

might be a controversial opinion but I think every kid should get the option to opt out on puberty until they feel ready for it. most of changes are irreversible and can cause serious mental (and sometimes physical) harm to both cis & trans kids.

One time, I was at a Q&A with Nora Roberts, and someone asked her how to balance writing and kids, and she said that the key to juggling is to know that some of the balls you have in the air are made of plastic & some are made of glass.

⏲️ As of today, we have about eighteen years to go until the Y2038 problem occurs. But the Y2038 problem will be giving us headaches long, long before 2038 arrives. I'd like to tell you a story about this.

You aren't a Go, or Rust, or Java, or Python, or JavaScript developer (unless you are writing those languages). In reality you are a developer who uses language X to solve Y problems. You can learn new languages and paradigms. Don't get stuck in the I am an X developer.

I'm old enough to have repeatedly experienced the process of learning and getting good at hard things, but also to see that it takes years of regular work to get there. There's no shortcuts. You can be a natural but you're still nowhere near where you'll be with 5yrs of practice.

Hey this shit is Bad for Depression. The majority of my clients I see who are depressed very much recognize the people who love them, the things they have, etc, and think that, on top of being depressed, they are ungrateful/self-absorbed for not being Appropriately Grateful

i've recently become obsessed with all the insane corporate ways we say normal things to each other. "I’m a little confused" is by far my favorite - it's absolute rage masked as a professional pleasantry. what are some of your best/most insufferable work gibberish phrases?
