This ocelot's aerial attack is quite impressive! It caught that colorful chicken.

She had such a big personality and was much beloved by staff and volunteers. Her passing has been so sudden and unexpected. It is the worst 😭 I'll miss her so much 💕

Antelope species live in Africa. Some-- Rando: Obviously! some live in zoos. Me:...[insert heavy sigh and a nosebridge pinch] Rando: What? Me: Just having my educator burnout triggered. Rando: What triggered it? Me:... 4/4

Rando: I remember the antelope from the Lion King. They have hooves and antlers just like deer. What's the difference? Me, in physical pain at this point: Deer are not bovids. They drop their antlers seasonally. Bovids like antelope have horns that do not fall off. Not all 3/4

Rando: Sure. Me: They are antelope, a type of bovid. Rando: They're deer? Me: Well, relatives of deer. Rando: Isn't antelope just a term for African deer? Me, my inner educator screaming, calmly replying: Not quite. "Antelope" is a scientifically poor term to describe-- 2/4

Rando at the zoo to no one in particular: What are those? [Referring to the sitatunga] *My educator ears perk up* Me: They are sitatunga! They live in the marshy regions of-- Rando: No. I mean WHAT are they? Me, confused: Are you asking what family of mammal they are from? 1/4

⬇️ A VERY LONG THREAD ABOUT THE PACIFIC HERRING SPAWN (with pictures!)🐟 It won’t be long now before the herring spawn again. This event is so important, both for communities & wildlife, that it’s sometimes referred to as the heartbeat of the coast. But herring are in danger.

That's just a tiny peak into the amazing world of aeolid nudibranchs. I'd like to thank Dr. Terry Gosliner, Patron Saint of Nudibranchs, Discoverer of 1,200+ nudibranch species, Reef Explorer Extraordinaire! 8/8

Do the nudibranchs regenerate their dropped cerata? Laboratory tests on the aeolid species Phidiana crassicornis showed full regeneration of dropped cerata, indistinguishable from their other cerata, in 41-43 days (Miller & Byrne, 2005). That's axolotl level regeneration! 7/8

So, what happens if they don't have any nematocysts to protect themselves with? Like the gecko, they use autotomy, or self-amputation, meaning they will drop a ceras (singular of cerata) or two. When they drop, mucus spews and the ceras will wiggle around as a distraction. 6/8

Immature nematocysts are stored in special cnidosacs (nigh-dO-sacks) in the tips of the cerata where they can mature. The nudibranch can use these for defense or offense. So, aeolids literally steal stingers from other animals to use as their own weapon. Rogue, is that you? 5/8

Cnidarians (nigh-dare-E-ans), like sea anemones, hydroids, and jellyfish, all possess venomous stinging cells (See: nematocysts, neh-matO-sists) that can only be used once before they have to grow new ones. Aeolids are predators of cnidarians and eat their spicy nematocysts! 4/8

Cerata have several functions. They are gill-like (Nudibranch means "naked gill"), aiding in respiratory functions. They're part of the digestive tract, but not merely to break down food. Within the cerata are sacs where they can store the stinging cells of Cnidarians! 3/8

I'm not going to get into taxonomic groups, because nudibranch taxonomy is CONSTANTLY changing. So, let's look at what distinguishes aeolids from other nudibranchs. You may notice in the pictures, they have these orange manes. Those are clusters of cerata (sair-ah-tah). 2/8
