um, cross out conservative and replace it with moderate/centrist. "former Eisenhower Republicans" would be a better definition.

Eisenhower was pretty conservative. He bemoaned the growing 'welfare state' he inherited from FDR but knew politically it was suicide to shrink it. All he could do was block its further expansion.
