The displacement doesn't happen in the nodes at all, I'm simply using the displacement modifier...

No expert but it looks like it's trying to interpret your displacement map as a vector displacement, hence the bulging, might help feeding it into a math node (multiply by 1) to force it into grayscale?

Hmm, I'm using the displace modifier so I don't think that that's the problem...

Did you linearize png and used tif as raw? Are they both the same middle grey as 0?

I had the same experience with octane. At the time it didn't read 32bit so it was using the preview and not the full resolution. That may or may not be the issue.

i always have misunderstandings in simple png in photoshop with alphas, let alone displ. map. good luck finding out, ill be following your post for answers myself.
