She uses the blanket to cuddle on the floor with school therapy dogs. "It’s like they soak up all the emotion in the room," she said.

Returning was not easy. That first day “was overwhelming." There were so many people. Students from other schools, staff from other schools, police, sheriffs deputies. "You’d walk in the hallway and there is someone watching you, everywhere there is someone watching you.”

Students at Parkland have been attending school for a few hours a day. Tomorrow is the first full day back. Amanda is a junior. This is the year of SATs for her, the year of AP scores, the critical year.

But she's having trouble focusing. Everything has changed. “I don’t think about any of the responsibilities I thought about before that day," she said. She has the SATs this Saturday, and a major AP essay project due March 21 — the day after she turns 17.
