It was important to us that in reporting this story, readers could see the women we followed as fighters within a system, and not just victims.https://nyti.ms/2Vm6b4f

This is Kenny Chirinos, who died this year in a Venezuelan hospital following a cesarean section — and an infection that she fought for days. She was an avid adventurer. Hearing her husband speak about her, I was reminded of all the sporty women I know from my last beat, in Colo.pic.twitter.com/3SiOyrxEDB

Milagros Vásquez, who we watched travel from hospital to hospital, was once a star athlete so celebrated for her skill that she traveled Latin America representing Venezuela. (She played handball, which I hear is a famously tough sport.)pic.twitter.com/uk6LbpRVeP

This is Kahel, whose mother Aydimar Alvarado traveled to 12 different hospitals, bleeding and crying, before she found one that would help her give birth. Kahel died 10 days later. That day her friends had planned to throw her a baby shower.pic.twitter.com/GSBADW9IGN

Extraordinary heart-wrenching work Julie. I reported on Concepcion Palacios in the early 1990s, before Chavez/Maduro, and I can assure you conditions there were not good back then either.

Root causes back then, lack of contraception and safe abortion

Perhaps if inhumane and devastating US sanctions were not in place, the system could serve them better.

Us sanctions won't prohibit the purchase of medicine or food..even though Maduro prefers to buy machine guns and arms from Russia.

Thank you for reporting this really important story, Julie. I was in Cúcuta in October and heard very similar accounts about giving birth inside Venezuela. The lack of official data since 2016 is outrageous too.https://www.thenewhumanitarian.org/news-feature/2019/11/27/Venezuela-Colombia-pregnant-women-birth-reproductive-rights-migration-Cucuta-maternal-care-migrants-refugees …

Thank you for this story. Once again I'm wondering 1. where most of the fathers of these babies are, 2. if there are international organizations distributing long term contraception like hormonal injections to Venezuelan women. It's too risky for them and for their future child.

This is a really important story but I wish you'd run a different cover image. The picture of Ninoska Torres in stirrups sends exactly the opposite message of a fighter - she's alone and vulnerable at the hands of the state.

That’s the point, she’s yes a fighter thats evident..but she’s alone and vulnerable like countless other women and their babies. A pretty picture doesn’t do her justice. It only makes us the readers more comfortable.
