Many of the families we interviewed for this piece do no have cell phones or credit. @marimagdys sent a community leader out on a motorbike with a phone so that these families could tell us their stories — and bring them to you, the reader.
At another point, a community walked an hour to take photographs to help us understand the situation.
These families have little access to power. But they are just like the families in the U.S. that are struggling to deal with the Covid crisis. They want their kids to be able to eat, go to school.
We asked Adolfo, the father of 4 whose kids are now surviving mostly on chicha, about his dreams for his children. "Bueno, para mis hijos, primero que todo, educarlos ... yo quiero que mi hijo sea alguien algún día en su vida. Que sean profesionales ... maestros, periodistas."
Colombia's government is trying to help. Its critical school meal program will be countrywide by April 20. But many kids wait that long.
