Rhonita had just turned 30 a few days ago, her father told me.
The children caught in the attack on a Mormon community in northern Mexico were suddenly alone. Several hid by the roadside. One boy, about 12, hiked miles to La Mora to tell family what had happened. The boy’s sister, about 9, was injured and set out on her own. She became lost.
It took hours for the family to find her.
After the attack in northern Mexico, a picture was sent to me by a relative of one of the surviving children. His name is Cody, 8, and he is sitting on a hospital bed, his head swaddled in bandages, a thin shoulder peeking out from under a white blanket.
The extended family struck by Monday’s violence has long roots in the broader community of fundamentalist Mormons who first took up residence in Mexico’s northern border regions in the late 19th century.
